If you are being treated for a circulatory system disorder, you know how drastically it can affect your life. In 2010, some 9.5 percent of all Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefits were awarded to disabled workers suffering from diseases of the circulatory system.

Qualifying For Benefits With Circulatory System Disorder

Many people have applied for and received these benefits from the SSA disability program. If you suffer from a circulatory system disease, you, too, may qualify. As disability lawyers, we encourage you to apply for New England SSA disability benefits if your disease has made it impossible for you to work.

Common Circulatory System Diseases

The function of the circulatory system is to supply the essentials for your heart and throughout the body. This includes oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other vital compounds. Here is some useful information about the most common circulatory system diseases:

  • Angina is caused by the lack of oxygen or blood supply to the heart. It is considered a warning of a possible heart attack and needs immediate medical attention. Angina causes severe chest pain that recurs.
  • Arrhythmia Is an irregular heart rhythm that causes the heart to beat either too quickly or too slowly. This condition is most often caused by a congenital heart defect but can have other causes. Arrhythmia is treated with medication, surgery, or pacemakers.
  • Atherosclerosis, also known as arteriosclerotic vascular disease, is a problem with blood circulation. The cause is a buildup of fatty deposits located in the walls of the arteries and other blood vessels. It eventually leads to a hardening of the artery walls and can trigger heart attacks.
  • Cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscles or myocardium. At first affecting the muscles of the lower heart, it can spread to those of the upper heart if left untreated, resulting in congestive heart failure or worse.
  • Coronary Artery Disease (coronary heart disease) is the worldwide leading cause of death. It is the most common form of circulatory system disease and is caused by atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) is a very frequent diagnosis for many Americans. It is a consistently higher than normal blood pressure reading. High blood pressure should always be treated because it can lead to heart damage. This, in turn, can cause heart disease and stroke.
  • Peripheral vascular disease affects the circulation of blood to the body’s extremities, mostly the arms and legs. The deposit of fatty acids in the walls of the arteries causes tingling and numbness in the extremities and can result in other serious complications.
