We are pleased to welcome Attorney Ilira Shehu to Keefe Disability Law to our disability staff to represent our disabled clients before the Social Security Administration judges. Ilira’s personal, educational and professional background has prepared her well for representing our clients at their hearings.
As a child in Albania in Southeastern Europe, Ilira came to the United States with her family at age 12. They settled in Worcester. From there, Ilira plunged right into 6th grade mastering English, completed high school, then college at Anna Maria College, and after working as a legal assistant for a couple of years, embarked on law school at Massachusetts School of Law. She helped in her family’s restaurant in Marlborough, filling in wherever necessary – waitress, bartender, hostess, kitchen helper, manager. During law school, she interned at the Framingham/Natick District Court in the clerk magistrate’s office, providing information to the public, helping in small claims court and at magistrate hearings. All of this customer support, constantly providing help to worried, confused customers was very satisfying.
After law school and passing the Massachusetts bar, Ilira worked in civil litigation, investigating claims for property damage, product liability and auto accidents. But this was not as rewarding as she had hoped, dealing primarily with insurance companies.
As you would expect, Ilira values personal interactions, and appreciates the diversity of other cultures and backgrounds. She was fortunate to have a chance to return to her roots, to live in Albania as an adult for 7 months while her husband worked there. Returning to the US, her daughter was born, now joined by a little brother. She, her husband and children live in Framingham, and they enjoy traveling, cooking and dancing together!
Ilira is active in her church, as a member of the parish council of the Annunciation Orthodox Church in Natick. She has run food drives for the church, as well as the fall bazaar, which featured a wide variety of ethnic food. Anyone who has spearheaded a fundraiser like this can appreciate the dedication, determination and expertise it demands.
Ilira enjoys getting to know her clients and learning each unique story, tailoring the help she provides to their specific situation. She lends a sympathetic ear to each client and applies her knowledge of Social Security to each case as necessary.
