Hormonal Suffering: Endocrine Disorders That May Qualify for Disability

Your endocrine system produces and distributes hormones throughout your body. These hormones help control body functions including growth and development, metabolism, skin mainenance, sexual function, reproduction, and mood. The proper production and control of these hormones is essential to keeping your cells and body healthy. Even the smallest change in hormone levels can produce complications throughout your body. As a result of the debilitating effects of some endocrine disorders, they may be recognized by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a disabling disease and be eligible for disability. However, not all hormonal issues are covered. Before applying for disability, makes sure the SSA recognizes your disorder.

SSA-Recognized Endocrine Disorders

Since endocrine disease is a vague term at best, the SSA evaluates hormonal imbalances based on the specific endocrine gland that is affected and how that hormonal imbalance creates specific health disorders. Within the endocrine system, the following organs produce hormones:

  • Pineal gland: produces melatonin and serotonin which control sleep patterns and mood
  • Pituitary gland: secretes melanocyte-stimulating hormones which stabilize growth, blood pressure, metabolism, sexual function, kidney function, temperature regulation, pain relief, and aspects of pregnancy functions
  • Pancreas: produces insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptides
  • Ovaries and testes: secrete estrogen, testosterone and progesterone
  • Thyroid gland: controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and how sensitive the body is to other hormones by secreting specialized thyroid hormones known as T3 and T4
  • Parathyroid gland: controls hormones for calcium distribution
  • Hypothalamus: synthesizes and distributes neurohormones to control metabolism, while also stimulating the secretion of the pituitary hormones
  • Adrenal gland: secretes hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and dopamine in response to stress, pain, and anxiety

Although severe hyperfunction (too much hormone) and hypofunction (too little hormone) can occur in any of these glands, the SSA specifically recognizes conditions caused by disorders in the following organs:

  • Pituitary gland
  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid gland
  • Adrenal gland
  • Pancreatic gland
