In October 2019, researchers published the results of a case study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The researchers studied 33 people with mesothelioma who had only been exposed to asbestos through talcum powder use. They had no occupational exposure to asbestos.
The study showed that 6 of the 33 people had tissue testing completed. The tissue in all six people had fibers of the type of asbestos found in cosmetic talcum powder. These asbestos fibers are inconsistent with the kind of asbestos found in other industries.
The study found that mesothelioma can develop from exposure to asbestos in talcum powder. Accordingly, researchers encouraged health care professionals to ask about talcum powder use for all patients diagnosed with mesothelioma.
