Consider Independent Roundup® Studies and Warnings
Over the past few decades, various groups studied or issued warnings about glyphosate. Glyphosate is the primary ingredient in Roundup®. Whether you use Roundup® products at home or work, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the study findings published in the following journals:
- Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. In 2001, researchers concluded that non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was linked to specific pesticides. The researchers studied a cross-section of Canadian men who lived and worked in six different provinces before reaching their conclusion.
- Occupational and Environmental Medicine. In 2003, researchers published a study that looked at why farmers have a higher rate of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma than the general population. The study found multiple pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, including glyphosate, were “potentially carcinogenic.”
- International Journal of Cancer. In 2008, researchers examined whether pesticides put people at risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The researchers looked at the results of almost 2,000 questionnaires from Swedish men and women before concluding that glyphosate exposure could increase a person’s chances of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for up to 10 years after exposure.
- International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. In 2014, researched looked back at 30 years’ of data and found that pesticides and herbicides, some of which contained glyphosate, increased a person’s chances of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In May 2019, researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found a link between Roundup® and liver disease. Previously, glyphosate had been linked to liver problems in animals. In this study, researchers looked at glyphosate excretion in urine samples of people with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and people without this type of liver disease. After adjusting for other factors, researchers found significantly higher glyphosate levels in the urine of people with NASH than in people who did not have NASH.
Additionally, the following agencies and governments issued warnings:
- The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Roundup® has been around since the 1970s. In 1985, an EPA committee concluded that Roundup® could be carcinogenic. However, in 1991, the EPA reversed its decision and found that Roundup® was not carcinogenic. The EPA confirmed this opinion in 2019.
- World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer issued an important report in March 2015. According to the report, Roundup® is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
- Denmark. Once WHO released its opinion that Roundup® probably causes cancer in humans, Denmark started to classify Roundup® as a carcinogen.
- France. France also took action after the WHO report in March 2015. In October 2017, the French Prime Minister announced a five-year phase-out and eventual ban of glyphosate products. In January 2019, a French court issued an immediate ban of Roundup® Pro 360, claiming that the France Environment Agency (ANSES) failed to consider the product’s potential health risks before approving the product.
Other studies and government warnings continue to develop and will be watched closely.
